About Baby Safety Month

JPMA initiated Baby Safety Month to educate parents and caregivers on the importance of the safe use and selection of juvenile products. The campaign started in 1983 when JPMA initiated “Expectant Mother’s Day.”  In 1986, it was extended to a week-long celebration, until 1991, when JPMA sponsored the first “Baby Safety Awareness Month.”  Since then, every September has been designated as Baby Safety Month.

Baby Safety Month Through The Years

Expectant Mother’s Day – September 9, 1983 – Focused on “fascinating facts and fancies found” which included some offbeat facts about pregnancy.  Debuted proclamations from some of the nation’s governors.

Baby Safety Week – September 4 – 10, 1988 – Sponsored in conjunction with CPSC. Actress Jayne Kennedy Overton was official “spokesmom” for the event.  Press Conference held at CPSC. Focus on ABC’s of safety - Awareness, Behavior and Caution.

Baby Safety Week – September 9 – 15, 1990 – Sharon Bush (the President’s daughter-in-law) was the official spokesperson. Jacqueline Jones-Smith, CPSC Chairman gave opening remarks. Focused on making baby safety a priority first, last and always.

Baby Safety Awareness Month – September 1991 – Officially became a month-long celebration.

Baby Safety Month – September 1994 – Awareness is dropped from the official title to make a more broad statement about the month.  Retailers are targeted to increase awareness of BSM and encouraged to promote the Certified Products they carry.  First retail winner of the in-store contest is Luria’s in Miami Lakes, Florida.

Baby Safety Month – September, 1998 – 15th Anniversary of Baby Safety Month. Focused on safe sleeping practices – safest is back to sleep. Retail winner is Babies R’ Us in Oxnard, CA.

Baby Safety Month – September 2005 – Baby Safety- A Partnership. For the first time in BSM history, JPMA offers all retailers downloadable materials electronically via www.jpma.org.

Baby Safety Month- September 2009 – JPMA highlighted the 20 categories within the JPMA Certification Program and debuted Certification Awareness Week (September 13-19, 2009) in an effort to educate parents and caregivers on the importance of buying JPMA Certified products. The Governor of Nevada provided a certificate of recognition acknowledging Certification Awareness Week as part of an educational campaign and California issued a resolution calling upon the people of California to observe Baby Safety Month.

Baby Safety Month- September 2010-  JPMA helped educate parents and caregivers on the importance of creating a safe sleep environment from naptime to nighttime. JPMA developed a comprehensive safe sleep campaign, Make Every Night A Safe Night. JPMA highlighted its ongoing commitment to safe sleep with a five-city education and sleep product donation tour.

Baby Safety Month- September 2015- JPMA helped educate parents and caregivers on safeguarding against hidden hazards in the home through – A Room With A Safe View- Safeguard Against Hidden Hazards. JPMA created a fun and interactive online game where the player can find the top 10 hidden hazards throughout our safety house.

Baby Safety Month - September 2016- JPMA helped educate parents and caregivers on the importance of product registration cards and recall response through - Baby Safety Right Out Of The Box! This award-winning campaign gained significant engagement among nearly 100,000 parents nationwide through wide-spread partner support, message-sharing and a robust social media campaign which included a video, animated graphics, and industry toolkits.
