Proper Use of the Harness Keeps Baby Snug and Safe
Baby Safety Month is the perfect time to help you understand how to correctly use the straps in car seats, known as harnesses. Every child, every car seat and every vehicle is different, so understanding the right way to secure the seat and the harness will maximize protection in case of a crash.

Each year, America loses more than 30,000 people to vehicle crashes. Tragically, children are not immune from dangerous or faulty driving or vehicle equipment. Next month, the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is participating in Baby Safety Month, sponsored by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). The goal of this campaign is to keep young children and babies safe by educating parents on the importance of correct car seat use, as well as the proper use of other baby products.
First time parents sit anxiously in the lobby of my office, nervously awaiting their first meeting with a certified child passenger safety technician. After going over what feels like thousands of little details to ready themselves for the arrival of the newest member of their family, this couple finally reached one of the most daunting tasks—figure out the car seat.
The modern car seat has come a long way since it first appeared on the scene in the 1930s. Fast forward to 1968 when Ford Motor Company released their version of a safe design. It wasn't until 1985 that the first child passenger safety laws were passed. Today, thankfully, all 50 states and the District of Columbia have child safety seat laws.
It’s time to start off summer safely! As we head into the summer months, many families are making plans to hit the road for a summer trip. For families with young children, those plans include double checking car seats and safety restraints. An important responsibility begins with selecting a child car seat and using it properly from the moment you bring your baby home to every car ride after that. A secure, properly installed car seat could save your child’s life during a car accident.
When the temperature drops, it makes everyone want to bundle up. However, the use of heavy jackets and bulky layers when using a car seat is a safety hazard. Snow suits, bunting and other “fluffy” items do not allow the car seat buckle to fit as snuggly as it should and can cause injury in the event of an accident.
But my baby is cold!
We got it and hear you loud and clear. No one wants you to take your child out in the cold in just a onesie. Here are some ways to keep your baby warm and safe during the cold season.
Drive-thrus are my best friend. You cannot leave your child in the car to get the cup of coffee you so desperately need because you have no sleep since your teething baby was up all night. Taking them out of the car and putting them back in the seat is more trouble than the coffee is worth. I will not patronize certain stores because they do not offer a drive thru.
I appreciate that it provides valuable information while keeping a light-hearted and 'fun' feel. It's a great community and way to interact with other parents. BSZ is also great about remembering us dads too in posts, blogs, etc.
